Amazon Tours

Spanning nine nations and covering 1.7 billion acres, the Amazon jungle is the largest rainforest in the world. With temperatures consistently in the high seventies (23-26*C) and excessive rainfall, it's also the optimal habitat for the largest diversity of plant and animal species in the world and Ecuador is one of these nine nations fortunate enough to have a piece of the rainforest. Its rainforest is located east of the Andes mountain range and covers nearly half of the country. With this comes great responsibility to protect these lands and many countries, including Ecuador offer wildlife tours to decrease deforestation and the need for the revenue generated from logging. For all you adventurous nature loving types, we are partnered with 15 remote Amazon Jungle lodges, hotels and river cruises in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest. Each Amazon jungle lodge offers guests a very unique experience.

BELLAVISTA CLOUD FOREST

Bellavista is a dream come true, not just for us, but for every nature lover and bird-watcher whose imagination is stimulated by the idea of a Cloud Forest. Started by a Colombo - British couple, Gloria and Richard, in 1991, what was initially a 55 hectare reserve has now become a certified ecolodge with a 700 hectare private reserve, the land owned by Gloria and Richard and a handful of like-minded conservationists. For anyone who seeks to immerse him or her self in its mysteries, soak in its vast views, anyone who wants to discover its rare and endemic birds, orchids and other species, anyone who wants to discover true peace and wild places, anyone who loves forests, there are few places like it so easily accessible!!.

THE LODGE:

The Cloud Forest is just such a special place, a marvel in its own right! Compared with the Amazon .. it is quite different, yet if you want to see a rain forest in the tropics, it has the advantage of being so close to Quito. We are less than one and three quarter hours from Quito, and yet our quiet roads see little traffic, little more than the transport for our visitors .. note we offer transport – inclusive packages from Quito or elsewhere, every day! Individuals, couples, families and groups, all are welcome, but remember you won´t be bothered by huge crowds. Birds of many colours, birds of restricted range .. we are in the Mindo and Slopes of Pichincha Volcano Area of International Importance for Birds. In 2006, 2007 and 2008, our region achieved the highest number of bird species seen in 24 hours in the Audubon Christmas Bird Count for the Americas!

FACILITIES:

We offer our guests a unique stay above the forest canopy! Some prefer our 4-storey geodesic dome, while others prefer our unusual Bamboo House, the half-timbered Trailhead House, or our secluded San Luis house. And for the budget-minded, we offer our Research Station / Hostel or camping options. The 360 degree view from the dome allows you to gaze upon the rugged peaks of Pichincha and Cotacachi in the distance. You can also sit out on your private balcony and observe the magical activity of the forests.

WHY BELLAVISTA:

We have an excellent network of trails, over 10 km in length, ranging from easy to genuine adventure. We have 6 waterfalls within the reserve, all deep in the forest and truly beautiful. We offer guided hikes with emphasis on general natural history, or birds or botany: group guiding or personal specialist guiding available. See Bellavista as a base for explorations deeper into the northwest .. Butterflies, canopy zipline, more waterfalls, more birds, Tulipe archaeological site. The cloud forest is a different type of rain forest, a mysterious enchanted forest with a much more benign climate than the Amazon Basin, and no malaria (2250 meters, 7200 feet altitude). We have from 8 to 14 species of hummingbirds at our feeders, all daily visible at incredibly close range! In fact, we guarantee you will see hummingbirds at Bellavista! Some 20 species have been observed here .. and in Tandayapa Valley the record is over 40 .. a world record!

This is the way to see the rainforest in luxury.

    THE LODGE:

Upon arriving at the entrance to the NWC Reserve, we switch to smaller, dugout canoes and are paddled up the blackwater creek to the lake and lodge (no motorized transport is allowed on the creek or lake so that wildlife isn't disturbed). This paddle can take anywhere from one to three hours, as on the creek guests might see Giant Otters, potoos, kingfishers, Hoatzins, jacamars, hawks, and monkeys. We eat lunch en route and arrive at the lodge by late afternoon. We have put together a GPS waypoint file (in Garmin MapSource format) for our guests who use GPS units.

    SANI LODGE

In the Ecuadorian Amazon you will find a mysterious lake called Challuacocha, where floating water hyacinths and grasses obscure the shores. When it’s quiet and the light is still low, you just might see, somewhere out there, lying hidden in the vegetation a rare and wild Manatee or Anaconda. Eventually, as the day passes you can peer out across the shimmering black water towards the setting sun, and almost certainly see the gleaming orange eyes of the Black Caiman. Come to Challuacocha and feel the mystery. Come to Challuacocha and experience the world of Sani Lodge.

    HISTORY:

During the past 15 years, members of the Sani Isla community have been working as guides, canoe men, chefs, and others for first class lodges in the Napo Area. About six years ago, a community member, Don Orlando Gualinga, began a dream about a project of their own. Given that the community had such intimate knowledge of the forest and jungle lodges, in addition to 37,000 hectares of pristine forest, he started searching for external help to start building this project. The first step was to hire qualified management and organize the financing. Funding to start the construction of 4 cabañas, the bar and the dining room, was provided by an oil company who made an agreement with the community, and after things got started, the Lodge reinvested money to build 6 more cabañas and improve services. Nowadays, management has passed to other hands and we are still reinvesting in our lodge to achieve and sustain a first class level. This ecotourism based project has other advantages besides economic benefits for the community. "Sani Isla" has developed a sense of pride for their forest and their culture. The lowland Kichwa culture is one tied directly to the jungle. Their creation stories, medicinal remedies and sources of food and fun, are all based in living closely with the forest, and loss of the forest will result in the loss of their culture.

    LOCATION:

PLANE TRANSPORT: Your plane leaves from Quito's airport at 11:00 am. (flight time subject to change). A bilingual host will meet you in the Quito airport and present a short introduction and orientation to the area. The host will help you with passport, baggage, and travel details. You will proceed to Coca, a short 30-minute flight from Quito. BUS TRANSPORT: A bus from "Trans Esmeraldas" leaves from the bus station in Quito, (which is located at Santa Maria Street and 9 de Octubre), at 9 p.m. (of day before your trip starts). The trip lasts about 9 hours. Your guide would meet you at El Auca hotel in Coca at 12:00. ONCE IN COCA: You will be met by an English speaking, naturalist guide and shuttled from the airport to a waiting motorized canoe at the edge of the Napo River. Your jungle experience begins as the guide explains some of the natural history of the area and introduces you to the ecological characteristics of the river. During your float down the Napo River, enjoy a light lunch and the opportunity to observe the unique flora and fauna of the area. We will travel down this river for about 3 hours before arriving to a small stream called Challuayacu where we will transfer to dugout canoes and paddle into our lake, the Challuacocha, and right up to Sani Lodge. This is the only way to access this remote and magical place, there are no roads in the area.

    ACTIVITIES:

CANOPY WALK: A new and much anticipated addition to Sacha's activities is our 940-foot (275-meter) long canopy walkway. At approximately 94 feet (30 meters) above the ground, imagine exploring the rainforest up in the treetops. SERVICES:

ACCOMODATION: Sani Lodge accommodates a maximum of 40 guests (at the cabins), emphasizing quality rather than quantity, and thereby offering you a more intimate experience with the rainforest. DINNING ROOM: Offers exquisite views of colourful sunsets over a beautiful lake. Every day, three exquisite meals are served for the delight of our guests. The call of a bamboo horn indicates that the food is ready.

    ADDITIONAL SERVICES:

10 minute walk through the forest will bring you to our 30m (100ft) tree tower, built around a giant, emergent Kapok tree. See parrots and parakeets from special viewing blinds within camera range! They come here mostly all mornings to eat the clay that aids in digestion of some of the unripe seeds and fruits they eat. This in turn allows us to offer our guests, the best facilities in the heart of the Amazonian Rainforest.

    LOCATION:

The accommodations are first rate, offering our guests a comfortable and relaxing experience. All of the rooms have a private bathroom, with hot running water and are outfitted with water-containers providing our guests with purified water, (brought from Lago Agrio) which is perfectly safe for drinking and brushing your teeth. YACHANA LODGE

Yachana is an indigenous Kichua word that means "A place for learning", which is the best description of what we do. As you embark on your journey deep into the Amazon, you can be proud that your visit is helping to address education, conservation and sustainable development in a unique way in this environmentally sensitive region. At Yachana, we believe the future of the rainforest is inextricably linked to the well-being of its inhabitants; only those who call the rainforest their home can ensure its survival.

    LOCATION:

At Yachana we're dedicated to finding workable solutions in the struggle between the ideals of rainforest preservation and the realities of life in the Ecuadorian Amazon. We employ an innovative development model based on a non-profit/for-profit organizational structure to provide education, fight poverty and disease, foster grassroots community organizations and conserve Ecuador's imperiled tropical forests. We've created two for-profit companies, Yachana Lodge and Yachana Gourmet, to meet our need for long-term financial sustainability. In 1995 we constructed Yachana Lodge which is located deep in the Ecuadorian Amazon on the banks of the Napo River 2.5 hours up river by motorized canoe from the city of Coca. After 13 years of operation, the lodge is an internationally recognized geo-tourism destination which has won numerous awards, including the Condé Nast Best Ecotourism Lodge In the World Award (2004) and the World Travel and Tourism Council "Investing in People" Finalists Award (2006).

    ACTIVITIES:

Hike deep into primary and secondary rainforest to discover wildlife. Discover native plants and trees including an extraordinary array of medicinal plants and their uses. Birdwatching on an island upriver and see over 30 species of birds. xplore Yachana's 4,300-acre. Go on a night hike and discover another world that comes out only at night. Participate in a traditional cleansing ceremony led by a local medicine man. Tour the Yachana High School's campus and Organic Farm. Learn to make traditional ceramic bowls called "mokaua" from an indigenous woman. Visit the local community, elementary school, and the health clinic founded by Yachana and local villages. Enjoy a refreshing swim in the Napo River. Float downriver in a canoe and enjoy the sights and sounds of the rainforest. SERVICES:

Your vist to Yachana includes a wide range of services and amenities, including three delicious meals every day, satellite Internet and a gift shop. The lodge is the training facility for the young Yachana Technical High School students in ecotourism. They are here to provide you with the very best service, but also, a very human touch. Yachana has created a name for itself thanks in large part to its delectable Amazon cuisine. Indigenous chefs craft their dishes from fruits, vegetables, chicken and fish produced on our own organic farm. Soups, salads and main dishes are served in a family-style setting on long tables in our dining hall. We also serve Yachana Jungle Chocolate in many forms at almost every meal, which needless to say is a highlight for anybody who loves real chocolate! We can accommodate special dietary requirements if advised ahead of time. Local and regional crafts and Yachana Lodge t-shirts are available in our gift shop. We also sell Yachana Jungle Chocolate and Yachana Choconibs, unique snacks made by Yachana Gourmet, an ecologically conscious, Fair Trade certified company which is part of the Yachana Group and was created to provide sustainable economic alternatives for local farmers.

  • If you're a reluctant adventure seeker who wants to see the beauty of the Amazon but still have the comforts of home, many of the lodges and riverboats offer the same amenities as any hotel found in the city. These amenities include: electricity, hot water, private bathrooms with toiletries and clean linens. Plus they offer an English-speaking guide for all Amazon tours.

The activities these Amazon vacation tours offer guests are numerous. You can take to the rivers in a boat, canoe, kayak, raft or even a tube on one of the many wildlife tours. Borrow some of the lodge's rubber boots and rain poncho to go on your very own Amazon adventure tour, or head up to one of the lodge's sky-bridges that spans 275 meters through the rainforest canopy.

If you love butterflies, many lodges have butterfly gardens with over 20 native species. Like a Galapagos Islands tour, there's no lack of animal species. At every turn you can encounter one of over eleven monkey species, tapirs, peccaries, capybaras and many more. The number of bird species to see on a bird-watching trip is too numerous to count but to name just a few: toucans, macaws, parrots, hummingbirds and the harpy eagle. Finally if it's culture you are seeking, there are plenty of opportunities for vacation tours to local indigenous communities, partake in their cultural activities or eat and drink their local cuisine.
